We’re changing the way that society views waste from that of a pollutant to that of a resource. Now that over half of the world's population is living in urban settings, we need new strategies to create sustainable, resilient, vibrant communities.
CUSP works with a small composting machine (a Joraform aerobic biodigester) and MyGoodness, a strong ecologically minded community food company. My Goodness produces a large amount of food scraps from the ferments and meals it produces and also uses compostable packaging in its markets and shop in the English Market in Cork city.
At the end of every week, CUSP brings all of MyGoodness’s food waste and packaging to the biodigester where it is shredded and broken down by microbes. Both the heat produced by the microbes and oxygen supplied by regular turning in the machine breaks the waste down quickly, producing compost in four weeks. After an addiional “curing” period the compost is used in the CUSP microfarm, closing the nutrient cycle within the community from which it came.
The Urban Soil Project replicates the patterns and relationships of nature, using modern technology and the spirit of the meitheal and attempts to model ways for Cork City and its communities to create a more sustainable, green, and respectful future.
